Master's in European Law

The University of Rennes 1 has a long tradition of research into and teaching of European law. The first course on the subject was set up in the 60s by Professor Pierre-Henri Teitgen, who was the first to teach Community law in France, at the Law Faculty in Rennes.

The European dimension of the university was then expanded, with the creation of the CEDRE (Rennes Centre for European Research), which is currently directed by Professor C. Flaesch-Mougin and has been associated with the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) since 1981. A postgraduate research course specifically dedicated to Community law was introduced in 1980. The award,  by the European Commission of the ‘Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence” international label, initially granted to five French universities, is further proof  of Rennes’ great interest in the European construction.

The master’s in European law takes two years (M1 and M2).

Students must be fluent in french

MASTER’S  2 :

Coordinators: Professor Joël Lebullenger - Mrs Muriel Le Barbier-Le Bris

Two options are open to our students:

  • A professional option which includes an internship at the end of the year,
  •  A research option, leading up to the writing of a dissertation.

Members of the ECJ, the Commission, or the WTO, are invited to conduct seminars in which academic viewpoints are enriched by more concrete perspectives on many issues relating to European law. This facilitates a more diversified approach to these subjects, through case studies, lectures and simulation workshops.

In parallel, our Master’s is complemented by a variety of cultural events:

  • A Summer European Campus, which allows students who wish to do so to work in small groups over a period of ten days on a research project leading up to the writing of a short report and an oral presentation. This summer course if open to students from other formations, the idea being to offer a variety of approaches (economics, law, political science…) to the subjects under study.
  • Visits to the Brussels and Luxembourg institutions are organised every year, thus giving students the chance to visit Union institutions and to meet with civil servants. The latter can offer to students writing a memoir a different perspective on their research topics.
  • The ‘Rendez-vous d’Europe’: i.e. public lectures given by specialists – academics, senior civil servants and prominent politicians – and revolving around an annual theme. These lectures, which this year will take place  from 25 January to 29 March, are the third highlight of the academic year.

Thanks to this formation, which is at once diversified and open to the professional world, graduates in possession of the Master’s 2 will be able to work in law firms, with companies doing trade and/or providing legal advice, with consultant and auditing firms, with professional organisations, in the diplomatic service, with regional and local authorities, the national and/or the Community civil service, in journalism, with independent administrative authorities (the Competition Council, the European Drug Observatory), in universities and research laboratories.

In these organisations, he/she will have to be on the look-out for legal developments, to provide expert legal advice, to argue cases, to work as a lobbyist, to take part in international negotiations, to inform the media,  to manage European projects, to teach and do research.
